Buried Treasure!

Wouldn’t it be amazing to find buried treasure? This week in our ‘Real Mess, Real Hope’ series, we find the Corinthians searching for the wrong kind of spiritual treasure–and Paul calls them out!

  1. READ 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Why does Paul say that he emphasizes “plain” preaching instead of eloquence or persuasive speech? How could clever or persuasive speech lead people to trust in human wisdom instead of the power of God?

  2. Have you ever been drawn to “deeper” or more complex spiritual ideas at the expense of the gospel? What did that look like?

  3. The sermon contrasts “D-O” (do) vs. “D-O-N-E” (done). What does this mean theologically? How would you explain the difference to someone unfamiliar with the Bible?

  4. Where do you see yourself relying more on your own effort (“D-O”) instead of trusting what Jesus has already done?

  5. READ 1 Corinthians 2:6-9 What’s the difference between human wisdom and God’s wisdom? What is God’s ‘hidden’ plan? Why do you think so many people didn’t/don’t understand it?

  6. Verse 7 says God made his plan ‘for our ultimate glory before the world began.’ What kind of glory might Paul be talking about? READ 1 John 3:2, 2 Corinthians 3:18, Philippians 3:20-21, Revelation 21:3-4. What do these passages teach us about our ‘glorification’?

  7. Reflect on v9 together and its meaning for you personally. Share your thoughts.

  8. READ 1 Corinthians 2:10-16 How have you experienced the Holy Spirit’s work of revealing God to you? How have you seen others come to know Jesus through the Holy Spirit’s revelation?

  9. In v14, the word ‘spiritual’ means simply ‘those who don’t have the Holy Spirit’. Share how you have seen this truth in the lives of those around you.

  10. What do you think Paul means in v16 when he says that we ‘have the mind of Christ?’

  11. What’s your ‘take-home’ from this passage? What is the Holy Spirit revealing to you right now?
