Pride & Prejudice

Who do you trust more, Jesus or yourself? The answer to this question might not be as simple as you think. Most of us would quickly say Jesus, but the pride in our lives often tells a different story.

1. Read Matthew 20:1-16. What did you learn about God’s Kingdom economy? How does it differ from our economy? Why might reckless generosity feel unfair? What does fairness mean to you? Why do you think fairness looks so different in God’s Kingdom? What implications does God’s reckless generosity have on us? How should it compel us to live?

2. In James 4:12, the author asks “what right do you have to judge your neighbor?” In what situation are you most likely to judge someone? Why did you want to judge? Think of the last time you passed down judgment and condemnation on someone, is it possible that God was trying to show you something about yourself?

3. Read James 4:17. We often talk about sins of commission. I did this or I did that and I knew it was wrong, but did it anyway. Talk about sins of omission. When was God calling you to do something and you refused to do it? What is something that you ought to do now that you’ve been putting off?

4. Read James 5:5. Have you ever felt this way? In what ways are you being generous? In what ways are you being greedy? What steps can you take to start investing less in earthy things and more in eternal things? How can the people in your group help you take steps to grow in this area?

5. Pride is trusting in our righteousness and humility is trusting in God’s righteousness. In what areas of your life is pride residing? What are some ways for Jesus to increase and you decrease?
